FAQ

How do I run a Speed Test?

In order to test your computers internet speed with Speedplexer you will need to install our speed tester, found at: www.speedplexer.com/download.php. After you have installed Speedplexer simply click on the blue BEGIN button. Speedplexer will then download a file from the nearest server and record your download and upload speeds.

Will Speedplexer work with Vista or XP or Mac?

Speedplexer currently is only for Windows users. Speedplexer is browser independent and will work with all versions of Windows.

Do I need anything installed for Speedplexer to work?

Once Speedplexer is installed the only plug in needed would be Flash 7 or newer.

What exactly does Speedplexer measure?

Speedplexer measures the speed of your connection in kbps using a server that is geographically closest to you.

What does kbps mean?

Kbps means kilobits per second and is the standard measurement of data packet size.

What is the difference between kilobytes per second and kilobits per second?

There are 8 bits in a byte. Most web browsers display in kilobytes per second. However internet service providers traditionally advertise speeds in kilobits per second.

Why does the download test work, but the upload test does not?

This most often is the result of software on your computer that is filtering traffic between the web browser and the server. Examples of this are firewall software such as McAfee, Symantec or Zone Alarm. Temporarily disabling the firewall will solve the problem. Speedplexer Inc. recommends closely looking at the firewalls properties and modifying the settings so that Speedplexer will work with the firewall enabled.

Why does the odometer stop when the speed test is running?

The meter is stopped while the test is running so not to use extra processor time.

Why does Speedplexer say I need Version 7 of Flash?

Speedplexer uses the JavaScript SWF Object to detect your Flash version. If you see this problem the best solution is to uninstall, restart your computer and then reinstalling Flash. On Windows Vista users installing the Flash Player ActiveX Control has also been successful.

Why do the results of Speedplexer differ from other speed tests?

Speedplexer uses a fixed number of servers around the country. The server used for your test may be farther from your actual location that is optimal.

Why is the download and upload speed so different?

Internet service providers provide their connections to give faster download speeds over upload speeds. This is due to the greater demand for downloading information than uploading it.

Why are there different results at different times?

Speedplexer has been designed to deliver consistent tests. The results provided will be in response to your internet service provider’s network in conjunction with your computers operating performance. Irregularities will happen from a host of reasons. The most common cause of irregular speed results are from shared internet connections. The more people requesting high amounts of information at the same time causes what’s known as bottlenecks and result in slow speeds of information. Bottlenecks happen most often during peak internet use, between the hours of 5PM and 8PM your local time. If irregular speed level are happening consistently throughout the day you either are experiencing “over sold / under delivered” internet service or could be experiencing software issues with your computer.

Will Speedplexer work on Wifi, DSL, Cable, Satellite and/or Dialup internet networks?

Speedplexer will work on any internet network. It is optimized to provide accurate download results.

Will Speedplexer work through a proxy?

Yes Speedplexer should work. The vast majority of internet users will not come across traffic through a Proxy. However there are many different utilizations and set ups of Proxy servers and Speedplexer cannot guarantee that it will work with all Proxy’s.

Will Speedplexer work through a corporate firewall?

Speedplexer is designed to work with firewalls. However, some corporate firewall techniques may interfere with the Speedplexer application. Please contact your network technician for further assistance in using the Speedplexer application.

Where are the Speedplexer test results logged?

Speedplexer test results are kept as cookies on your computer. If you clear your cookie cache you will loose all historic tests on your computer. If you select to share your test results with other Speedplexer users your results will be kept on the shared server database. Each test is kept under strict PII policies under the Speedplexer Privacy Policy http://www.speedplexer.com/privacy.aspx
